I Want To!

I Want To!

Text:

‘But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified’ – 1 Corinthians 9:27

Thought:

September ’14 sees an exciting development – launching a midweek link group in Saltash. My wife Jenny is heading this up, commencing with a five week training programme on friendship evangelism, drawing on her skills as a personal development trainer. Giving an open-invitation to the church we attend in Plymouth, we were pleasantly surprised by the number who expressed an interest in doing the course, especially when the musicians’ practice night was changed so that people could come.

As this launch came about quite suddenly, there is an air of excitement. However, as with anything we do or that needs to be done, there are some key steps. First there is:

  • Desire – I want to!

The old adage, “You can lead a horse to the water but you can’t make it drink” remains true when it comes to Christians sharing their faith on a one to one basis. Most want to do so, but many find it a challenge to say the least. They have a desire which is good, but this leads us on to the next step:

  • Discipline – I want to and I will!

When it comes to having to do something, we can always find a reason not to. Athletes on occasions have to drag themselves out of bed into the wind, rain and cold in order to be successful. There can be a constant battle against fear, discouragement and disillusionment but a resolute heart will carry one through. Another step to consider is:

  • Development

Are those who intend to come to the training completely inexperienced? Have they never shared their faith before? No, many have shared their faith successfully over the years and seen people become Christians through their witness. So why are they coming? They recognise that we live in a changing world and sometimes different approaches are needed to help people understand their need of a Saviour. Look at any successful salesperson and you will discover that they are continually honing their skills to reach today’s market.

  • Delight

Eric Liddell, the famous sprinter depicted in Chariots of Fire said, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast! And when I run I feel his pleasure.” He was able to delight in what he was doing. Nothing can describe the thrill of leading someone to put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. I remember trying to book a holiday, but each place I looked at, I felt uneasy about going. There was no peace in my heart. So I decided not to go away, unsure as to why. The very night I would have gone away, a young lady called into the church right after the service. She was upset and in need of counselling. As I explained about Jesus, she decided there and then to ask Him to become her personal Saviour. The feeling of joy, being able to help someone in need, far outweighed any disappointment of not going on holiday. It was a precious moment I will never forget.

In reading this you may be someone who is not a Christian. If you would like to know more about that click on How to become a Christian under Today’s Teaching. For those who are, we have a responsibility to witness. Follow the above principles and turn desire into delight, for then you will have good success.
